New LinkedIn Workforce Insights data, reported by Business Weekly, shows Guildford, the historic UK market town in the Surrey Hills, is one of the world’s most concentrated locations for AI talent.
The analysis found that 1.76 per cent of LinkedIn members in Guildford are employed in AI roles, placing the town among the world’s highest‑density AI labour markets and alongside higher profile innovation centres such as Cambridge.
AI talent density refers to the proportion of working professionals whose primary role is classified as artificial intelligence‑related, rather than the overall size of the workforce.
Measured in this way, the figures indicate that Guildford, with a population of around 80k people, has a particularly strong specialisation in AI relative to its population, outperforming most cities globally on this metric.
In the UK, AI talent is often associated with cities such as London, Manchester or Edinburgh. Yet while these centres employ large numbers of AI professionals, AI makes up a smaller share of their overall workforce.
By contrast, Guildford’s result reflects a more focused ecosystem, where AI represents a notably higher share of the professional workforce.
A thriving AI ecosystem
Guildford’s position reflects the presence of an interconnected AI community in the wider Surrey Innovation District ecosystem, combining research, commercial application and cross‑sector deployment.
Surrey Research Park, based in Guildford, is home to a growing community of AI‑led businesses working across sectors including space technology, health, advanced engineering, communications and cybersecurity.
The Park also has a long association with applied artificial intelligence: it was the location where Sir Demis Hassabis, founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, carried out some of his earliest practical AI work while developing games at Lionhead Studios, prior to his later academic research and the creation of DeepMind
Today Park companies apply AI to a wider range of real‑world challenges, from satellite operations and secure networks to healthcare analytics and industrial supply chain coordination.
Direk Ltd, based at Surrey Research Park, is using the power of advanced AI technology to redefine the future of smart building management. Access to top AI talent is therefore crucial to the company’s growth strategy.
Amir Tabar, CEO, CTO and Co-Founder, said:
“For DIREK, access to top AI talent is the single biggest driver of our growth. But in our field, AI expertise alone is not enough. It has to be combined with deep domain knowledge in electronics, physics and civil engineering to build solutions that actually work in real buildings.
“That combination is hard to find in most places. Guildford is the exception. The 6G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey has been our main hub for talent, giving us direct access to engineers and researchers who understand both the science and how to apply AI to it. This data confirms what we see every day. Guildford is one of the best places in the world to scale an applied AI business.”
Guildford’s AI talent pool is underpinned by the University of Surrey’s Surrey Institute for People‑Centred AI. The Institute brings together researchers from computer science, engineering, health sciences, social sciences and ethics to advance AI, ensuring its designed around human needs.
The Institute plays a core role in training talent, supporting collaboration with industry, and ensuring that AI systems developed in the Surrey Innovation District ecosystem designed for real‑world impact.
Dr Andrew Rogoyski, Director of Partnerships & Innovation, The Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI) said:
“Guildford has long been a hotspot for advanced technologies including cyber security, video games and now AI. The University has a 40-year history of excellence in AI and is one of the leading AI labs in the UK.
“Through our Institute we focus the development of AI on areas that make a difference to people, including healthcare, education, sustainable AI and AI safety. With the growing demand for AI talent, it’s only natural that businesses should gravitate towards areas like Guildford where these cutting-edge skills are created.”
Caroline Fleming, Director of the Surrey Innovation District ecosystem at the University of Surrey said:
“This labour market research from LinkedIn provides strong evidence that, alongside its historic character as a Surrey market town, Guildford has developed into one of the world’s most concentrated locations for AI talent. As a central hub within the Surrey Innovation District ecosystem, it reflects the depth of AI expertise that has grown around the University of Surrey and at Surrey Research Park.
“For technology‑led businesses competing for highly skilled AI specialists, access to such a concentrated pool of AI talent offers a competitive advantage, helping them innovate and scale faster, strengthening their global positioning and contributing to local and UK economic growth.”
