University of Surrey in top 10% for its work with business

The University of Surrey’s strengths and commitment to creating real world impact from its research has been highlighted by the first Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) dashboard this week.

Helping businesses gain advantage

The University of Surrey was positioned in the top 10% nationally for its work with business, and in the top third for its work with the public and third-party sectors and research partnerships as it was recognised for its broad range of engagement opportunities, allowing organisations, of all sizes, to gain advantage from knowledge, facilities and networks.

The University of Surrey also achieved a top 20 per cent rating for its work on intellectual property and commercialisation. This demonstrates the inventiveness of academics, the strength of  tech transfer and start-up support and investment networks, such as Surrey Research Park, which benefits researchers, students and local growth companies alike.

Targeting areas for growth

Professor David Sampson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, said: “I’m delighted that our very first KEF outcome has placed so much of our innovation work within the top ranges for the sector, and well above the average within our cluster. This recognises the truly great work we do on sharing and imparting knowledge, particularly around business and commercialisation of our research. The KEF provides us with a valuable framework. We can then readily map our whole innovation ecosystem and clearly target the areas for growth. We aspire to make innovation mainstream at Surrey.”

About KEF:

The aim of the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) is to increase efficiency and effectiveness in the use of public funding for knowledge exchange (KE) and to further a culture of continuous improvement in universities. Based on data from 2018/19, it will allow universities to better understand and improve their own performance, as well as provide businesses and other users with more information to help them access the world-class knowledge and expertise embedded in English HEPs.
