Summer students primed to help solve R&D challenges for tenant firms

Surrey Business School is working with eight companies on the Research Park, giving them access to the brightest brains and business mentors to help enhance their business R&D, as part of its inaugural Summer School initiative for undergraduates.

Running for the first year, the two week course (29th July–9th August) is built around the Business Model Canvas, a strategic management and lean start-up template for developing new or existing business models.

Over 20 undergraduate students from a range of academic backgrounds including business nutrition, tourism, chemical and mechanical engineering, economics and political science will form multi-disciplinary teams to solve practical tasks put forward by our businesses.

The challenges submitted by our businesses range from finding new markets for existing products, analysing the impact of cryptocurrencies on gaming and finding differentiation in crowded markets and extending customer bases.

Each group will have an academic mentor supporting them throughout the project and they will present their findings in a presentation to the businesses.

Students will be working with mentors and advisors from Surrey Business School and a range of companies and organisations including Microsoft, the Army, Guildford Philanthropy, Infinite Space, Qube Learning, Ericcson, Fixing Dad and Linked-In.

For tenant businesses on the Research Park, there is still an opportunity to get involved.
