Stars Edge: Transforming Satellite Technology

Stars Edge is revolutionising satellite propulsion technology.

Founded by CEO Sara Alao in December 2023, has created a self-generating electricity system that eliminates the need for chemical fuel with a self-generating electricity system that eliminates the need for chemical fuel. This innovation is set to reduce costs, improve data quality, and broaden satellite applications in defence, telecommunications, and Earth observation. Supported by the UK Space Agency and SETsquared Surrey’s Cosmic Capital Programme, Stars Edge has progressed from TRL 5 towards launch readiness. The programme provided mentorship, strategic insights, and valuable connections, helping the company overcome key challenges.

Challenges and Support
As a first-time entrepreneur, Sara faced obstacles in scaling operations, refining investor pitches, and navigating the space sector. The programme offered tailored guidance on investment readiness and strategy development while facilitating critical industry connections, such as a consortium partnership with Portuguese universities and £500,000 in R&D support from the University of Surrey.

Key Milestones
The company has advanced its technology by completing Earth-based propulsion testing and preparing for destructive testing ahead of its March 2025 launch. Collaboration with organisations like UKTIN and plans to relocate to Surrey Research Park further highlight its growth trajectory.

Impact and Future Goals
The programme has been instrumental in Stars Edge’s progress. Key achievements include:

With its launch-ready system, Stars Edge aims to tackle global challenges like wildfire detection, disaster response, and crop monitoring. The Cosmic Capital programme has positioned the company for sustained growth and success.

“The Cosmic Capital Programme has been instrumental in helping us build a strong foundation. From mentorship to strategic networking, the support has made a tangible difference in accelerating our progress and positioning us within the space industry. It’s a true accelerator in every sense of the word,” says Sara.
