E-Bikes Now Available at Surrey Research Park to Support Sustainable Travel in Guildford

Getting to and from Surrey Research Park just got a lot greener, thanks to the arrival of nine new e-bike docking stations as part of a major Guildford-wide sustainability initiative.

The availability of e-bikes at the Park is a pivotal part of the £1.3 million programme to provide public battery-assisted cycles across Guildford, supporting the town’s ambitious sustainability goals while improving connectivity for businesses, their employees and visitors.

With these docking bays, anyone based at or visiting the Park can now enjoy a healthier, more flexible commute, a quick trip to town or a short hop to use the fitness facilities at Surrey Sports Park – all while cutting emissions.

The inclusion of Surrey Research Park brings the scheme closer to full rollout, with 300 e-bikes available for pick-up and drop-off across 56 locations in the town centre and other local strategic points.

The Park’s nine new docking bays are located near the entrance adjacent to the Surrey Technology Centre, on the hardstanding beside the main cycleway at the top of Gill Avenue.

Caroline Fleming, Director of the Surrey Innovation District and innovation lead at the Park, said:

“We’re thrilled to see the e-bike docking stations arrive. The eco-friendly e-bikes are an exciting addition to the Park, offering sustainable options for travel to and from the Park.

As part of the University of Surrey, the Park is committed to encouraging sustainable travel and along with our e-shuttle minibuses, they will give people more flexibility to travel with minimal environmental impact.”

The e-bike scheme is a partnership between Surrey County Council and Guildford Borough Council, with the service delivered by provider Beryl.

Phil Ellis, CEO and co-founder of Beryl, said:

“Our core aim is to remove the barriers to sustainable travel for as many people as possible, encouraging people out of the car by providing them with a sustainable, convenient, reliable, cost-effective and fun alternative.

“By swapping the car for an e-bike journey, you’re not only boosting your own health and fitness, you’re also contributing towards reducing congestion and improving regional air quality.”

In 2018, the University of Surrey received £75,000 as part of the Santander Cycles University Challenge to help launch a pedal-powered bike hire scheme from the campus, which also served Surrey Research Park. That scheme had 50 manual bicycles, whereas this latest initiative offers access to a much larger fleet of  electric bikes.
