Direk, a leader in AI-powered building management, is transforming how businesses optimise their spaces. We caught up with CEO Dr Amir Taba to learn about the company’s latest advancements…
Since its inception in 2017, Direk has been at the forefront of indoor location technology. The company’s cutting-edge AI-based occupancy-centric building management solution is already trusted by hundreds of organisations worldwide. Designed to optimise resource allocation within buildings, it tackles a range of challenges – from energy saving and space utilisation to health and safety, and indoor navigation.
The software development specialist started by addressing the limitations of GPS in indoor environments, developing a highly accurate positioning system with precision within one metre. This innovation became the foundation for Direk’s suite of advanced solutions, which, over the past seven years, have evolved, driving the company’s rapid expansion.
When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Direk swiftly repurposed its original technology to monitor social distancing. Instead of relying on mobile apps, it utilised existing building infrastructure to create indoor radar technology.
Then, a few years later, Direk pivoted once again – this time towards sustainability. Responding to market demand for a solution to reduce energy consumption in buildings, it applied its location-tracking technology to manage heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
Direk’s innovations and strong growth trajectory continue. In 2023, it celebrated some major achievements. The company won a prestigious Innovate UK award for ‘Trustworthy AI’ solutions. This initiative involved a consortium with major stakeholders, including Wicks Construction and three universities, and substantial funding of £1.2 million.
Meanwhile, on the international stage, Direk secured the environment track of the TASMU Accelerator in Qatar, which not only awarded $50,000 but also helped the firm establish an office in Qatar and expand its operations in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
Direk is navigating a fast-paced business environment as it brings its cutting-edge solutions to market. With the launch of its space management solution, multiple trials are underway. The next release, Dr Taba explains, focuses on substantial improvements to Direk’s existing offerings. “We are focused on completing our building management system by the end of the year and are looking to collaborate with key partners to market our solutions effectively.”
Over the last year, Direk has doubled its team size, now employing 14 skilled professionals. This has necessitated expanding its presence within the co-working space at SETsquared Surrey, where Direk plans to secure additional desks to accommodate new hires. “We’ve significantly increased our team because we face strict deadlines and the market window for success is very narrow,” says Dr Taba. “We must act swiftly and efficiently to capitalise on this opportunity.”
SETsquared Surrey has supported Direk throughout its journey. Dr Taba highlights the invaluable support received, particularly through mentorship provided by Entrepreneur in Residence Keith Dixon. “Keith has helped us with everything we needed – our strategy, networking and even guidance on our pitch deck,” he shares. “The ecosystem at Surrey Research Park is brilliant and there are good programmes for networking. We are very pleased to be a part of such a dynamic community.”
Direk’s continuous innovation and adaptability have established the software development company as a global leader in AI-powered building management, driving smarter, more efficient and sustainable environments. The future holds exciting possibilities, and here at SETsquared Surrey, we can’t wait to hear what’s next.
