Clean Energy Storage: powerQuad at Heathrow & Glastonbury

SETsquared Surrey member powerQuad is on a mission to replace diesel generators and disposable batteries with clean energy storage for events and construction.

Recent deployments at Heathrow Airport and Glastonbury Festival show that mission gaining real momentum. Founded in 2019, powerQuad is a clean-tech start-up developing portable, zero-emission battery systems to replace traditional fossil fuel generators in construction, live events, and emergency power. Their smart, stackable energy units provide silent, reliable power wherever it’s needed. The product is a flexible and sustainable solution for off-grid or temporary use, making it ideal for clean energy storage for events and construction.

As part of the Heathrow “Lift Off” programme (a collaboration that connects innovative SMEs with airport infrastructure partners), powerQuad worked with Ferrovial Construction to tackle a common but costly problem: the use of single-use batteries in traffic cone warning lights.

The result? A purpose-built, rechargeable 6V lithium battery pack that fits directly into existing warning light housings, eliminating the need for disposable batteries without changing on-site practices. The system includes a rugged five-slot charger and custom protection circuitry to ensure safe and reliable use in demanding construction environments. A switch to these reusable units not only reduces environmental waste but also delivers significant cost savings. For a standard deployment of 60 lights, powerQuad estimates the rechargeable solution can save up to £40K over five years and divert a substantial volume of batteries from landfill.

In parallel with their infrastructure work, powerQuad is also gaining visibility in the live events sector. This summer, the company supplied renewable power for an off-grid installation at Glastonbury Festival, delivering reliable battery and solar energy for a full six days.

As a SETsquared Surrey virtual member, powerQuad is part of an innovation community that supports start-ups to scale, commercialise and connect with major partners. Their success at Heathrow and Glastonbury highlights how innovation from across the SETsquared Partnership is solving real-world challenges and powering a cleaner future, one battery at a time.
