Spearheaded by Surrey Research Park, the CancerBusters campaign brought together the University of Surrey’s leading cancer researchers and innovative companies from the Surrey Research Park. The goal? To foster collaboration, exchange knowledge, and drive tangible progress in cancer diagnostics, treatment and care.
A Bold Mission for our Health Cluster
The main objective is to build on our growing health cluster in the Surrey Innovation District and raise the profile of the University of Surrey and Surrey Research Park as a cancer research hotspot.
Our CancerBusters campaign aims to bring together academic research and industry expertise, focusing on critical issues such as cancer detection, monitoring and research, health inequalities, and advancements in both human and animal cancer research.
By leveraging the cutting-edge research from the University of Surrey and the real-world expertise of industry leaders, the campaign highlights how multidisciplinary approaches can lead to innovative solutions for complex health challenges like cancer.
Two prominent research groups from the University of Surrey spoke and were represented by:
- Dr. Adam Frampton, Head of Oncology and Associate Professor in Surgical Oncology, who co-chairs the Cancer Research Network.
- Dr. Robert Kerrison, Senior Lecturer in Cancer Care, who co-chairs the Cancer Care Research Network.
Industry Leaders Join the Conversation
Beyond academia, the campaign featured the innovative work of several industry leaders within our Surrey Research Park ecosystem, including:
- SiSaf Ltd showcasing their BioCourier technology for targeted cancer treatments.
- Datar Cancer Genetics Limited a leader in molecular diagnostics and personalized cancer care.
- AURA Veterinary contributing insights into cancer diagnostics and treatment in animal health.
- ANGLE renowned for its work on liquid biopsy technology, particularly in early cancer detection.
These companies highlighted the practical applications of their groundbreaking technologies, emphasizing the need for collaborative approaches to accelerate progress.
Building Bridges for Multidisciplinary Innovation
One of the key highlights of the CancerBusters launch campaign was the recognition of the mutual benefits of academia-industry collaboration. This was emphasised by Arjun Sikand, the Chief Operating Officer – Surrey Academic Health & Care Partnership.
The Partnership is a collaboration between University of Surrey, Surrey County Council and Surrey Heartlands NHS.
A first of its kind, it is an evolving model to specifically extend the traditional Academic Health Science Centre’s (AHSC) focus to beyond discovery, clinical research and the NHS, to include the community and social care, with a specific focus on prevention and integration.
Looking Ahead
Our CancerBusters campaign is just the beginning of what promises to be a transformative journey in the fight against cancer.
