Fitzpatrick Referrals seek bioscience research students for Guildford hospital

This placement is focused predominately on clinical and population-based research activities, rather than laboratory-type investigations. The hospital is a busy and dynamic environment, and there are a large number of activities going on simultaneously. The role of the Bioscience Research students is to assist the clinicians with several aspects of their clinical research. This may include, but is not limited to:

SUPERVISION, OPPORTUNITIES AND TRAINING

There will be the opportunity to develop an individual project of personal interest.  Previous Bioscience students have presented data at International veterinary conferences, and data collected during their placement has led to several publications of novel research. Authorship on these publications will be considered if a significant contribution to the data retrieval or preparation is evident.

Bioscience students are asked to present bi-monthly summaries of their research activities to the hospital personnel and they assist with creation of the patient lists for weekly tumour board / multidiscipline meetings. They are also welcome to attend clinical rounds (held daily), presentations by other hospital staff and other pare-clinical activities. Students are encouraged to take an active interest in the cases attending the hospital, and to assist with development of new ideas and clinical projects.

PERSON SPECIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should have a background in biology and biosciences within a veterinary clinical environment.  Although previous knowledge is desirable, training will be given to candidates from other disciplines.

These tasks will require proficiency in the use of Excel and Access spreadsheets/databases. Each day is highly varied, so the student will be called upon to use their own time management skills to ensure they keep on top of the necessary tasks. There are several continual projects which will require daily attention, while other activities will be time-limited and focused.

You should be a self-starter with good communication skills, confident working as part of a team and also able to ‘fly solo’. Whilst most of the work required takes place before 5pm, there may be very occasional times when later working is necessary.
