Following a successful trial of a 5G VISTA prototype at the MK Dons football stadium, a “breakthrough” report examining 5G’s potential to revolutionise the way fans interact with content at live sporting events has been published by UK digital technology innovation centre Digital Catapult.
The report, ‘5G Vista: bringing new dimensions to in-stadia sporting events’, examines considerations for 5G Broadcast technology’s widespread roll-out at sporting events, pinpointing current challenges and opportunities associated with its adoption.
This marks the latest milestone in 5G Vista (video in stadia technical architecture), a government-backed consortium using 5G technologies to deepen audience engagement, broaden content for fans and create valuable new commercial opportunities, for which the University of Surrey has played a major role.
Surrey’s 5G/6G Innovation Centre is responsible for the multicast/broadcast security within the 5G VISTA project. The work includes designing and validating end-to-end security for group communications using Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) and a lightweight multicast key management system.
Regius Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Director of the 5G/ 6G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey has said:
“Sport and entertainment are critical elements of our communities – you only have to look at the incredible summer of sport we have experienced here in the UK. With fans going back to venues, it’s important that they are not met with the same digital offering that has soured many experiences, and we believe 5G VISTA is a strong step in the right direction.”
