The Surrey Research Park is home to many innovative technology companies offering a unique business environment that provides a stimulating workplace in an aesthetically pleasing situation.
Sector clusters at the Park include the digital economy, mobile phone technology, software which includes a strong cluster of synthetic environment companies which are involved in the computer games sector, internet protocol security, biomedicine and biotechnology. The Park has also been instrumental in the commercial success of many companies and has created the scope for significant transfers of technology between the University and industry.
Satellites are responsible for massive advances in mobile technology and how we see the world.
What has changed our understanding of the Earth and our place in the universe more than the imagery and data obtained from space? It is this information that has fundamentally changed how we understand the intricacies of our planet.
In 1985 the University of Surrey formed Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd as a spin-out company to transfer the results of its research into a commercial enterprise. The growth of the company accelerated, and their innovative approach to the design, build, test and operation of spacecraft has propelled SSTL to the forefront of the small satellite industry. Today they are the supplier to 40% of the world’s small satellite exports market.
The well known “Supervet” Noel Fitzpatrick has based his leading animal hospital on the Surrey Research Park. This venture is the first of its kind in Europe and is changing the way cancer is treated in animals; raising standards and care.
It made sense for Fitzpatrick Referrals to be based on the Park because of their links with the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine – holding positions at the University and also providing placements for students. This relationship has enabled the University’s Vet School to be one of the best in the world.
The Park supports a burgeoning computer software sector represented by a host of products and services.
From the beginning the Park has been popular with those in the computer industry. In 2015 there were over 60 games studios in Guildford as well as games testing companies, technology companies that support and develop core gaming software, specialists in graphics and audio technologies that bring games to life. These separate developments have led to a cluster of computer games companies growing up in and around Guildford. They are active in what is now recognised as an important branch of computing, known as synthetic environments.
Today the Park is home to a number of digital innovators including: Gaming, Digital Security, Virtual Reality, Data Processing and Digital Design.
